Sussex Dragon Brandy – Batch 2 available now!
*Limited edition of 41 bottles*
Slake’s Dragon Brandy is meticulously made in Sussex by the Sea from local grapes and aged in Oak casks at our distillery. This limited second batch of just 41 bottles was twice, carefully pot distilled from Oxney Organic Estate’s 2018 Pinot Noir pomace, fermented on over winter to extract the character from the grape skin, producing an intense, subtly smoky & spicy spirit of Sussex. Fair warning to those who enjoyed batch 1 from the Pinot Gris grape, which was comparitively light & fruity, batch 2 is a deep & complex brandy with an almost vegetal gravitas. The distillate was cut slightly with spring water to barrel strength and charged into small, second fill oak casks to mellow & gently age. Once the right amount of character had been imparted by the oak the brandy was proofed down to Dragon strength with Sussex spring water, perfect for sipping neat, and bottled without chill filtration or any adulteration.
Sussex doesn’t grow any of the classical high-yielding, more neutral brandy grapes like columbard or ugni blanc that you might find across continental Europe. In fact the growing conditions and terroir here suit a number of rather more characterful grape varietals, like Pinot Gris, Bacchus, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and to a slightly lesser extent Chardonnay, Auxerrois & Pinot Blanc. In our more temperate climate these vines are highly-suited to producing thin, acidic wine, ideal for top quality brandy. Join our journey and experience a wonderfully unique taste of Sussex.
